Historical Collection

 The historical collection is the third greatest collection in our museum. It holds about 3290 pieces of art, and can be divided into four groups:

 

  1. Pieces connected to the Rákóczi family. Collecting these pieces dates back to the beginning of our establishment. These objects are mainly from the XVII-XVIII. century; and cultic objects from the XIX-XX. century. Beside the seal of Ferenc Rákóczi II. being one of a particular object in our collection there are letters from György Rákóczi I., Zsófia Báthory, Ilona Zrínyi, Ferenc Rákóczi II., iron chests and wheapons of the age;- which also should be mentioned. The cult also appears in the objects of the reburial of Ferenc Rákóczi II. from the age 1906; newspapers, postcards, memorial publications. Furnitures, doors, old books and medals are also part of this group of indispensable objects.
  2. The presents of Lajos Szathmáry;- a famous collector from Chicago, U.S. He used to study in The Reformed Colledge of Sárospatak and presented our museum with his works of art. These are portrays, letters, and engravings of Lajos Kossuth. The diary of the ship Mississippi is another intersting piece not to mention the menu from a New York party, toast lists, and books about Lajos Kossuth from 1850-52.
  3. Locally significant hictorical objects, miscellaneous type works of art. These are mainly locks, pots, consumes, many kind of wheapons and some pieces of jewellery. One can also discover findings from the crypt of the castle church : rings, jewels, pendants and buttons. Flags from the XVIII-XX. century played important parts in the segments of our history.
  4. Stoneworks from the XVI-XVII century are essential remains of our castle from the late renaissance era. It is also worth to mention the tombstone fractions of Gábor Perényi, the fragments of statues, legs of benches and lion statues. The most amazing pieces of stones can be found in the Renaissance Stoneworks exhibition called „The talking stones”.
  5. Most of the pieces of the collection are recorded and photographed. Our collection of datas completes the mass of work ot arts with historical documents from the XVI-XIX. century, and local historical documents from the XIX-XX. century. The photo collection gathers mainly negatives and slides in connection with the Rákóczi and Kossuth cult.
